The Okavango Tilapia (Tilapia ruweti) is a modestly sized cichlid from the swampy floodplains and vegetated shallows of the Congo-Zambezi watershed, turning up across the Kasai system, Lake Mweru, and the Lufira River among other connected drainages. In the wild it gravitates toward nutrient-rich, well-planted backwaters where it grazes on detritus, soft plant material, and invertebrates. A flexible diet that translates well to life in a home aquarium. As a beginner-level species with a relatively compact adult size, it is an accessible entry point into African cichlids, though its territorial streak means tank mates and setup need a bit of thought. Like many cichlids, its coloration shifts subtly with mood, so you quickly learn to read what it is feeling just by looking at it. Breeding behavior is genuinely interesting to observe: males stake out territory and court females, who then take the lead on nest construction and egg care while the male holds the perimeter. That territorial drive intensifies around spawning, so providing distinct sight breaks and enough space for weaker fish to retreat is important.
