Found in the lowland peat swamps of northwestern Sumatra, Betta rubra is a small, subtly complex fish that rewards patient keepers willing to meet its specific needs. Males display broad black lateral bars against rich body coloration, while females and juveniles carry a longitudinal black stripe along the flank. A useful visual cue when sexing the fish. A distinctive triangular marking below the eye is one of the defining features of the species and its close relatives in the B. rubra group. Despite its beginner care rating, this is not a fish for a typical community setup. Its quiet temperament means it tends to lose out to more boisterous tankmates, so it does best alone, in a single pair, or with very gentle, similarly-sized species from comparable blackwater habitats. Groups are sometimes attempted, but results are mixed. Some keepers report manageable squabbling, while others find dominant individuals becoming persistently aggressive. The breeding behavior is genuinely fascinating: unlike most bubble-nesting bettas, this species is a paternal mouthbrooder. The male incubates the eggs in his mouth for up to 17 days, releasing free-swimming fry that are large enough to take small live foods right away. One note worth knowing. Specimens in the hobby may have been crossed with the closely related B. dennisyongi before that species was formally described, so lineage of purchased fish is sometimes uncertain.
