Found in the lower and middle reaches of rivers draining into the Atlantic slope of Central America, Vieja heterospila is a sizable cichlid native to the Candelaria and Usumacinta river systems shared between Mexico and Guatemala. These are ancient, biologically rich waterways, and the cichlids they produce tend to reflect that heritage. Chunky, full-bodied fish with strong personalities to match. Adults can push toward the upper end of the nine-inch range, so this is not a species you can comfortably squeeze into a small setup. A 55-gallon tank is really a starting point, and bigger is always appreciated. Like most cichlids of this group, expect a fish that is curious, territorially assertive, and capable of rearranging your carefully aquascaped substrate without a second thought. It is an omnivore in the wild, so a varied diet keeps it in good condition without much fuss. The water chemistry of its native rivers runs toward the alkaline and moderately hard side, which is worth keeping in mind when planning its tank. This is an intermediate-level species. Not brutally demanding, but someone with a bit of cichlid experience will get a lot more out of keeping it than a complete newcomer would.
