Volcano Killifish

Found only in a narrow slice of West Africa, this small killifish, Aphyosemion volcanum, is native to the Kaké river drainage in the shadow of Mount Cameroon. It inhabits slow, swampy sections of rainforest brooks and streams, where the substrate is largely volcanic in origin. A specialized environment that hints at why this species can be a challenge to keep happy in captivity. Unlike many of its killifish relatives, it is not a seasonal species, meaning it does not follow the wet-dry cycle of annual killifish and does not require the egg-drying techniques those fish demand. That said, replicating the soft, acidic, and very clean water of its native rainforest habitat is where most keepers run into trouble. Despite being listed at beginner level in terms of aggression and feeding, its water quality requirements call for more attention than a typical community fish. It is a small fish, rarely exceeding two inches, and like most killifish it carries attractive coloration typical of the genus. Aphyosemion volcanum remains genuinely uncommon in the hobby, so sourcing it usually means connecting with specialist killifish breeders or dedicated clubs rather than your local fish store.
