Panda Loach

The panda loach (Yaoshania pachychilus) is a small, bottom-dwelling fish from a handful of fast-flowing mountain streams on Dayaoshan in Guangxi, China. A naturally restricted range that explains why it shows up in the hobby only sporadically and often at a premium price. Juveniles are the ones you'll see for sale, and for good reason: they carry bold black-and-white banding that earns them the panda name. As the fish matures, those crisp bars gradually fade and blur into a mottled network of blotches and lateral rows, making adults considerably less visually dramatic. Morphologically, this is a true hill-stream specialist. The body and head are flattened, the paired fins splay horizontally, and together they form a suction-cup arrangement that lets the fish grip rocks in powerful current. In the aquarium it barely swims in the conventional sense, instead crawling and hopping across hard surfaces, which is genuinely fun to watch. Keep a group of four or more to see natural social behavior; solitary individuals are less active. Some territoriality shows up around favored feeding spots, but it rarely escalates beyond posturing. Tankmates should share the same fast-water, well-oxygenated preferences. Stream gobies, rheophilic loaches, and hillstream catfishes all make reasonable companions. Breeding has not been documented in captivity.
