Zebra Plec
Hypancistrus zebra
The boldly striped zebra plec: rare, sought-after, and worth every effort.

About
Zebra plec (Hypancistrus zebra) is one of those fish that hobbyists obsess over, and it's not hard to see why. Native to Brazil's Rio Xingu, it wears a bold pattern of thick white and black stripes that immediately sets it apart from other plecos. It's a small catfish by loricariid standards, rarely exceeding four inches, but it packs a lot of personality into a compact frame. Brazil banned exports in 2004, which drove prices sky-high. Captive-bred specimens now routinely sell for well over a hundred dollars, with proven breeding pairs costing considerably more. Despite its peaceful nature, the zebra plec is not a straightforward community fish. It is shy, easily outcompeted at feeding time, and demands very clean, well-oxygenated water with strong flow. Bottom-dwelling tankmates should be avoided entirely, as it will defend its territory against other similar species. Small mid-water fish like rummy-nose tetras or harlequin rasboras make better companions than anything that will crowd it on the substrate. It is also a genuine omnivore, so don't rely solely on algae wafers. Meaty foods like bloodworm and brine shrimp should be part of its regular diet. Breeding is achievable and fairly well documented in the hobby, making it a rewarding project for an intermediate keeper willing to provide the right conditions and invest in a quality group.
