Found nowhere else on Earth but the depths of Lake Apoyo in Nicaragua, Amphilophus flaveolus is one of a small cluster of cichlid species that evolved within a single volcanic crater lake. Making it one of the most geographically restricted cichlids in the hobby. That isolation also makes it a genuine conservation story: wild populations are naturally limited, so captive-bred specimens are the responsible choice. Adults reach a modest size for a Central American cichlid, with a stocky, laterally compressed body and pale yellowish to cream tones that give the species its name. Like most members of its genus, this fish carries the assertive personality typical of New World cichlids. Territorial with conspecifics and capable of rearranging substrate and uprooting plants with enthusiasm. It does best when given a spacious tank with solid rock structures and open sandy areas to mimic the rocky littoral zones of its home lake. Pairs can form strong bonds but will defend territory vigorously during spawning, so tankmates need to be chosen with care. This is a fish for keepers who already have some cichlid experience and appreciate a species with genuine scientific significance behind the glass.
