The Smaragd Fighting Fish (Betta smaragdina) is a wild relative of the familiar betta, native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins of Southeast Asia. Where the domesticated splendens has been bred into flowing-finned showpieces, this species retains a more natural look: a light brown body decorated with iridescent green scales on the opercle, subtly barred tail fins, and the shifting blue-green sheen characteristic of the splendens species complex. Compared to its more notorious cousins, it has a reputation for being noticeably calmer, though it still isn't a straightforward community fish. Males can coexist with sufficient cover available, but keeping them with other bettas or long-finned tankmates is asking for trouble. Small, peaceful cyprinids and loaches from similar habitats can work, but research before mixing is essential. Like all labyrinth fish, it breathes atmospheric air directly, so surface access is a must. Breeding follows the classic bubble-nest approach typical of the group, with the male constructing a nest and taking on all parenting duties after spawning. The fry need humid air above the water surface for their labyrinth organ to develop correctly, so a tight-fitting lid is critical when raising young. Coming from a wide range of habitats, it tolerates varied water conditions well, making it a reasonable choice for a keeper new to wild-type bettas.
