The blotched upsidedown catfish (Synodontis nigriventris) is one of those fish that makes visitors do a double-take. Native to the middle Congo River basin, including the Kasai and Ubangi drainages, this small catfish has genuinely inverted its lifestyle, spending the vast majority of its time swimming belly-up. What looks like a quirk is actually a finely tuned adaptation: the darker belly faces downward, blending with the dim surface light filtering through dense riparian vegetation, while the lighter dorsal side mimics the bright sky above. This reversed countershading is a neat flip of the camouflage strategy most fish use. The behavior develops gradually. Juveniles start out swimming normally, but by around 7-8 weeks old they begin adopting the inverted posture that defines the species. Keep them in groups of at least four, ideally more, as they gain confidence in numbers and you will actually see them out in the open more often. They are one of the most easygoing members of their genus and pair well with African tetras, dwarf cichlids like Pelvicachromis, and similarly sized peaceful species. Breeding has been accomplished but remains tricky and is not well documented. This is a genuinely odd fish that rewards patient observation without demanding expert-level care.
