The blue-eye plec (Panaque suttonorum) is a mid-sized suckermouth catfish native to the river systems draining into Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela, both from the western and eastern sides of the basin. Like other members of the Panaque genus, it possesses the characteristic spoon-shaped teeth that allow it to rasp wood. A behavior you will definitely notice if you keep driftwood in the tank, which you absolutely should. The species is also capable of facultative air-breathing, a neat biological trick shared across the genus that helps it cope with low-oxygen conditions in its natural habitat. Its namesake feature, those blue eyes, stands out against the typical dark, patterned body you expect from a pleco-type fish. Diet in the aquarium should lean heavily on plant matter and algae, supplemented with the occasional protein source, keeping it true to its omnivorous nature. It reaches a respectable adult size, so tank space and good filtration matter. This is not the most demanding plec you could keep, but it rewards keepers who put in the effort to understand its needs, making it a reasonable choice for someone moving beyond beginner species into more interesting catfish territory.
