Found in the Beni River basin of Bolivia, Hemiloricaria beni is a slender whiptail catfish belonging to the loricariid family. The armored suckermouth cats. Like others in its genus, it has the ability to breathe atmospheric air when needed, a useful adaptation for surviving in poorly oxygenated or seasonally variable waters. In the aquarium this doesn't require any special setup, but it does hint at the kind of dynamic, sometimes challenging environments these fish come from. Adults stay fairly compact, making them a practical choice for mid-sized tanks, and their elongated, flattened body gives them a very different silhouette from the chunkier plecos most hobbyists are used to. They tend to be peaceful and spend much of their time resting on or near the substrate, occasionally on flat decor or driftwood. A sandy or fine-gravel bottom suits them well and lets them exhibit natural resting behavior. Diet-wise they're not picky. Sinking prepared foods, biofilm grazing, and occasional meaty foods all fit their omnivorous habits. Care falls somewhere in the intermediate range, mostly because they appreciate stable, well-maintained water rather than any particularly demanding requirements. Not the most active display fish, but a genuinely interesting species for a keeper who wants something a little different from the usual loricariids.
