The Catemaco platyfish (Xiphophorus milleri) is a small livebearer with a naturally restricted range, found only in and around Lake Catemaco in the Papaloapan basin of Veracruz, Mexico. In the wild, these fish hug the shallows. Tight to shorelines, inlet mouths, and the margins of tributary streams, often in just a few inches of water. They sometimes gather in loose groups, which makes a well-planted, species-focused aquarium a natural fit. In the lake, they share space with swordtails (Xiphophorus hellerii), so they're accustomed to mixed company from their own genus, though a dedicated setup really lets you observe their natural behavior without competition. Being a livebearer, breeding happens readily once adults are comfortable, so be ready to manage population growth if you keep both sexes. The care level sits at intermediate, not because the fish are particularly fragile, but because replicating their preferred soft, shallow, well-oxygenated conditions and sourcing quality stock takes a bit more effort than with common platies. Their compact size means a modest tank works fine, but they appreciate dense planting and calm water. For hobbyists interested in Mexican endemics or conservation-minded fishkeeping, this species is a genuinely rewarding project.
