Chinese Hillstream Loach

Found in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams in Guangdong Province, China, this small hillstream loach, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, is the most commonly traded member of its genus and goes by several names in the hobby, including Chinese hillstream loach and Hong Kong Otocinclus. Its body is dorsoventrally flattened and its paired fins are oriented horizontally, forming a powerful suction structure that lets it grip rocks tightly in strong current. Open-water swimming is largely replaced by a crawling, clambering style of movement. Coloration is variable even within single shipments, ranging from lighter to darker patterning depending on mood and environment, though individuals with a yellow-based dorsal fin bearing a red distal band are reliably this species. It grazes periphytic algae and detritus from rock surfaces and is a genuinely useful and active addition to the right setup. Keep a group of six or more, as loose aggregations bring out natural territorial sparring between males, which is entertaining to watch and rarely harmful to robust tankmates. It reacts poorly to other similarly shaped species, particularly smaller balitorids, so choose companions carefully. Active mid-water fish that share its preference for brisk flow tend to work well. It has been bred in aquaria successfully and is considered accessible for less experienced keepers who can meet its need for high water movement and quality.
