Clown killifish (Epiplatys anulatus), also called rocket killifish, are one of those small fish that genuinely punch above their weight in terms of visual impact. They wear bold bands of black and yellow along the body, and the tail fans out in vivid blue and orange. Hard to miss even in a densely planted tank. Maxing out around 1.5 inches, they are a natural fit for nano and planted setups where larger fish would feel out of place. In the wild, this West African species favors slow-moving, heavily vegetated water, and they bring that same preference into the aquarium. Floating plants and surface cover will make them feel right at home. True to their surface-dwelling nature, you will almost always find them hanging near the top of the water column, which makes them a nice complement to mid- and bottom-dwelling tankmates. They are genuinely peaceful and can be kept safely with dwarf shrimp, making them a popular choice for shrimp-focused tanks. These are tank-bred fish, which tends to make them hardier and more adaptable than wild-caught specimens. For newer keepers, they are a forgiving and rewarding species as long as the tank is well established before introduction.
