The dojo loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is a long, eel-like fish native to a broad swath of East Asia, from the cold rivers of Siberia and the Amur drainage south through China, Korea, Japan, and into northern Vietnam. In the wild it gravitates toward muddy-bottomed ponds, swamps, and rice paddies, often burying itself in silt or leaf litter with just its head exposed. Its common name references a genuine quirk: changes in barometric pressure can send this fish into a frenzy of activity, and people in its native range have historically read that restlessness as a weather forecast. In the aquarium it develops a reputation for real character, often becoming bold enough to feed from your hand over time. The spotted body pattern, thickened adipose crest along the caudal peduncle, and concealed suborbital spine help distinguish it from close relatives. It is peaceful toward tankmates of similar or larger size, though it may harass very small fish or slow-moving fancy goldfish during feeding. Groups tend to be more settled and active than solitary individuals. This species is a capable jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is not optional. Years of mass production have made finding genuinely healthy stock a real challenge, so sourcing carefully before buying is worth the effort.
