Found on benthic reef habitats across tropical Indonesian waters, Favites favosa is a stony brain coral belonging to a genus well known for its bold, geometric colony structure. Each polyp sits within a distinct corallite cup, separated from its neighbors by shared walls, giving the colony a tessellated, almost honeycomb-like texture when viewed up close. Coloration tends toward earthy greens, browns, and golds, often with contrasting polyp centers, though this can shift depending on the zooxanthellae present and the light environment the colony inhabits. In the wild, this species occupies shallow to moderate-depth reef zones and has been documented in Indonesian reef assemblages stretching back over a century, giving researchers a useful long-term record of how these corals have responded to both natural shifts and increasing human pressures on coastal reefs like those around Jakarta Bay. In the aquarium, it is a solid choice for hobbyists who have moved past the beginner stage and are comfortable maintaining consistent reef chemistry. It does best with moderate lighting and moderate water movement. Enough to keep detritus from settling in the corallite cups without stressing the tissue. Like most faviids, it can extend sweeper tentacles at night and should be given adequate space from neighboring corals.
