Octopus coral (Galaxea alta) is a large-polyped stony coral found across the Indo-West Pacific, including the reef systems of the Philippine archipelago and the broader Western North Pacific region. In the wild it grows as a massive or encrusting colony, and the common name comes from the way each polyp extends long, sweeping tentacles that radiate outward like the arms of a small octopus. Especially prominent at night when the colony is fully expanded. The tentacles are tipped with white, giving an active colony a distinctly textured, almost three-dimensional look against the skeletal base. Like other Galaxea species, G. alta is an aggressive spaceholder on the reef and deploys sweeper tentacles to sting and push back neighboring corals. In the aquarium this territorial behavior needs to be taken seriously. Give it generous clearance from other colonies, particularly soft corals and LPS neighbors. It falls into the intermediate care bracket, not because it is fragile, but because its aggression and moderate lighting and flow requirements mean you need to plan its placement carefully from the start. Reefers who account for that spacing tend to find it a rewarding and relatively durable keeper.
