Found where common names and scientific names converge, Gambusia affinis is a small livebearer from the slow backwaters, vegetated ponds, and quiet stream pools of the Mississippi basin and Gulf Coast drainages. It tolerates an impressive range of conditions, turning up in brackish water and everything from ditches to lakes, which has made it one of the most widely introduced fish on the planet. Governments around the world released it as a biological mosquito control agent, though its actual effectiveness is now questioned, and the ecological damage it causes to native fish and invertebrate communities is well documented. In the aquarium, this is a species that demands respect and careful planning. It is genuinely aggressive, prone to fin-nipping, and will outcompete quieter tankmates for food. A species-only setup is the sensible approach, and even then males will squabble. Females tend to be larger and more assertive than males, so keeping them in a ratio of roughly three females per male helps reduce stress. Breeding happens almost automatically when both sexes are present, with females capable of producing several batches of fry per year. The fry are easy to raise but finding homes for them can be a challenge, since this fish has a modest following in the hobby compared to its more colorful livebearer relatives.
