The Panamanian Eartheater (Geophagus crassilabris) is one of the lesser-seen Central American cichlids in the hobby, native to both the Pacific and Atlantic drainages of central and eastern Panama. In the wild it gravitates toward moderate to fast-moving water over mixed substrates of sand, small stones, and leaf litter. That eartheater lifestyle of sifting mouthfuls of substrate in search of food is very much on display in the aquarium too, so a soft sandy bottom is a real benefit. Adults develop a noticeably reddish coloration, particularly in the fins, which helps separate this species from its close relatives G. steindachneri and G. pellegrini. There is also some local variation in color pattern depending on where the fish originated. Behaviorally, the main thing to plan around is male-to-male aggression. Dominant males become especially intolerant of rivals when breeding is on the table, and most setups should run just one male. A polygynous arrangement with two or more females works well and reflects how the species breeds naturally. Speaking of breeding, females are maternal mouthbrooders that form only loose pair bonds, and experienced keepers often separate a holding female to protect her from harassment. This is an intermediate-level species that rewards patient, attentive fishkeeping.
