The Creole Topminnow (Girardinus creolus) is a small livebearer from Cuba, where it lives in clear, fast-moving highland streams with high oxygen levels and hard substrates of rock, gravel, and sand. Despite the name "topminnow," this species is firmly a midwater fish. You won't find it cruising the surface or rummaging the bottom, which already sets it apart from many of its livebearer relatives. It's a compact fish, rarely exceeding an inch and a half in length, making it a good candidate for a well-appointed smaller aquarium. In the wild it grazes on algae, aquatic vegetation, and insect larvae, so offering a varied diet in captivity is the right approach. Temperament-wise it's peaceful and does best alongside other small, non-aggressive fish that won't compete aggressively for space. Because this species comes from clean, well-oxygenated streams, good filtration and regular water changes matter more than they might with hardier livebearers. Which is part of why it's rated as intermediate rather than beginner territory. It's not a species you'll find in every shop, but hobbyists with an interest in Cuban or Caribbean endemic fish will find it a genuinely rewarding, if modestly sized, project.
