Found on shallow reef slopes and rubble zones across the Indo-West Pacific, Goniopora diminuta is one of the smaller members of the flowerpot coral group, ranging from Sri Lanka through the Philippines and into Indonesia at depths from the surface down to around 30 meters. Like its relatives, it produces long, tubular polyps that extend well beyond the skeleton, giving the colony a soft, anemone-like appearance when fully open. The individual polyps are tipped with a ring of tentacles and a central mouth disc, and a healthy colony in full extension has an almost hypnotic, flowing quality. Goniopora as a genus has a reputation in the hobby for being finicky, and this species is no exception. It sits solidly in intermediate territory and is not a great choice for a first reef tank. Long-term success tends to come down to stable, well-maintained water quality, consistent high-intensity lighting, and moderate, non-turbulent flow that keeps the polyps gently moving without blasting them. The reasons Goniopora corals have historically declined in captivity are not fully understood, but modern reef-keeping practices and improved husbandry have improved survival rates considerably. Patience and attention to detail are the main things this coral asks of you.
