Found in the freshwater rivers and streams of South Korea, Hemibarbus mylodon is a substantial cyprinid that can reach nearly 14 inches in adulthood, so this is not a fish to underestimate at the shop. It belongs to a group of Asian barbs known for robust, torpedo-shaped bodies built for life in flowing water, and its proportions reflect that background. Deep-bodied compared to many of its relatives, with a purposeful, muscular look. In the wild it inhabits clean, well-oxygenated river systems, and a home aquarium should reflect that preference with good filtration and decent water movement. Despite its eventual size, it is considered a workable choice for beginners who plan ahead and can provide the room this fish will eventually need. Temperament tends toward the peaceful side typical of larger cyprinids, making it a reasonable candidate for a spacious community of similarly sized tankmates. It is not a common sight in the hobby outside of Korea and parts of East Asia, so finding specimens may take some searching through specialist suppliers. If you do track one down and have the tank space to match its adult dimensions, it makes for an impressive and unfussy resident.
