Minkley's cichlid (Herichthys minckleyi) comes from one of the most remarkable and restricted habitats in North America. The Cuatro Cienegas basin in the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico, a network of spring-fed pools and channels found nowhere else on Earth. This endemic status makes it both scientifically significant and a genuinely unusual fish to encounter in the hobby. Adults are a moderately sized cichlid, and like many of their family they develop a robust, laterally compressed body as they mature. What sets this species apart biologically is its polymorphism: wild populations show distinct differences in jaw and tooth structure, with some individuals developing molariform teeth well suited for crushing snails, while others have more typical pointed teeth. This dietary flexibility carries over into aquarium life, where adults will readily take snails and small feeder fish alongside more conventional foods. That said, this is not a beginner's cichlid. It can be difficult to keep in good long-term condition and benefits from a well-structured setup with rock work and plant cover to break up territory.
