The tiger characin (Hoplias malabaricus) is one of those fish that commands respect the moment you learn what it's capable of. Native to an enormous range stretching from Costa Rica down through most of South America's river basins, it thrives in an impressive variety of habitats. Clear, fast-moving hill streams, sluggish muddy lowland channels, irrigation ditches, and still ponds alike. That adaptability says a lot about how tough this fish is. In the wild it spends daylight hours resting among vegetation, then shifts into hunting mode after dark, ambushing prey rather than chasing it down. In the aquarium you'll see the same behavior. Long periods of stillness on the substrate punctuated by explosive bursts when food is near. Juveniles will eat crustaceans and insect larvae, but adults are dedicated fish-eaters, and tank mates are simply not an option. This is a species best kept alone or in very carefully considered species setups. Anyone who's handled one in the wild will tell you those teeth and powerful jaws are no joke, so even routine maintenance deserves extra caution. For a keeper who wants a large, characterful predator and can commit to its needs, the tiger characin is genuinely rewarding to keep.
