Dentate flower coral (Lobophyllia costata) is a large-polyp stony coral found across the Western Central Pacific, where it grows on reef slopes and flats at depths ranging from just a few meters down to around 25 meters. In the wild it tends to occupy the kinds of moderate-to-low energy reef zones where water movement is gentle rather than turbulent, and that preference translates directly into aquarium care. This is a coral that does better with calm, indirect flow rather than direct blast from a powerhead. The fleshy, lobed polyps expand noticeably when the animal is feeding or simply content, giving the colony a plush, almost cushiony appearance. Coloration varies quite a bit across individuals, running through greens, reds, browns, and mixed combinations. What really sets this species apart in the hobby is its reputation as one of the more forgiving LPS corals available. It adapts well to typical reef aquarium conditions, tolerates the occasional husbandry mistake, and doesn't demand the intense lighting that some of its relatives require. It does appreciate regular feeding with small meaty foods to supplement what it gets from its zooxanthellae. Give it moderate indirect light and a peaceful spot away from aggressive neighbors and it tends to settle in and thrive.
