Lobed Cactus Coral (Lobophyllia dentata) is a large-polyp stony coral native to the Indo-West Pacific, ranging from the Philippines through Indonesia and into Papua New Guinea. In the wild it occupies reef environments from very shallow water down to around 30 meters, giving it a broad tolerance for varying light and surge conditions. The colony growth form is characterized by the distinctive fleshy, lobed polyps typical of the Lobophyllia group. Thick, textured, and often displaying a range of earth tones, greens, and reds depending on the individual specimen and the lighting it receives. In the aquarium, this coral has earned a reputation as one of the more accessible large-polyp stony corals for newer reef keepers. It asks for moderate lighting and genuinely prefers low water movement, so placement near the bottom of the tank away from powerhead outputs usually suits it well. It is considered reef safe and is not known for aggressive sweeper tentacle behavior to the degree of some other LPS corals, though maintaining reasonable spacing from neighbors remains good practice. It is a solid, unfussy choice for someone looking to move into large-polyp stony corals without taking on a particularly demanding species.
