The Marbled Killifish (Fundulopanchax marmoratus) is a small but visually detailed species from a surprisingly narrow slice of the world. It is known only from swamps, slow brooks, and forest streams around Mbonge in southwestern Cameroon's coastal rainforest. Unlike many killifish that hobbyists encounter, this one is not a seasonal or annual species, meaning it inhabits permanent water bodies and does not follow the boom-and-bust lifecycle tied to drying seasonal pools. That distinction matters for how you keep it. One of the first things to know is that this fish wants cooler water than most tropical species in the hobby, and that preference alone shapes your setup decisions considerably. Because of its restricted natural range and sensitivity to warmer temperatures, most experienced keepers recommend housing it in a dedicated species tank rather than a community setup. Males display detailed marbled patterning across the body and fins, and the lyretail form develops extended fin rays that add to the overall impression. At roughly one and a half to two and a half inches, it fits comfortably in a modest tank. Breeding is achievable for an intermediate keeper with some patience. It is an egg scatterer that deposits in fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and the fry are quite tiny at hatching, requiring very small foods in the earliest days.
