Found across a broad sweep of West and Central Africa, Nannocharax fasciatus ranges from the river systems of Senegal west to Cameroon, including the Lake Chad basin, and turns up as far as the Dja and Bumba rivers in the middle Congo drainage. That wide distribution hints at an adaptable fish, though it stays firmly in the small end of the size range, rarely exceeding about two and a half inches in a home aquarium. The body is slender and marked with bold horizontal banding that helps it blend into leaf litter and root tangles along stream margins. Exactly the kind of environment worth recreating in the tank. In the wild it picks through the substrate for small invertebrates, and captive specimens take readily to meaty micro-foods like daphnia, bloodworms, and small frozen invertebrates alongside quality prepared foods. Behaviorally it tends toward the lower levels of the water column, often resting on flat surfaces in a way more reminiscent of some loaches than a typical characin. A group suits it well, and a planted setup with soft substrate and shaded areas will bring out more natural behavior. It sits at an intermediate care level, suited to keepers who already have some experience managing smaller African stream species.
