Nantaiensis Goby
Rhinogobius nantaiensis
A feisty Taiwanese stream goby that rewards patient, experienced keepers.

About
Found darting across rocky substrates in the clear, fast-moving streams of southern Taiwan and parts of China, Rhinogobius nantaiensis is a small but bold goby that packs a lot of personality into a compact frame. Like most members of this genus, males are noticeably more colorful and patterned than females, and both sexes spend the majority of their time perched on or near the bottom rather than actively swimming in open water. That benthic lifestyle means tank decor matters. Smooth river stones, caves, and crevices give this fish the territory anchors it needs to feel at home. Be aware that males can be quarrelsome with one another, so a roomy setup with plenty of visual breaks is a practical necessity rather than just a nice touch. As a strict carnivore in the wild, it responds best to meaty foods like frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and small invertebrates, and it generally ignores dried foods unless well conditioned to them. The cool, clean, well-oxygenated water of its native hill streams should be replicated as closely as possible in captivity. This is not a fish that tolerates poor water quality or sluggish flow. Intermediate care experience is a fair starting point for anyone considering this species.
