The Picotee Livebearer (Phallichthys fairweatheri) is a small, unassuming livebearer from Central America, ranging across slow-moving and marshy waterways from Mexico through Guatemala and into Honduras. In the wild it gravitates toward densely vegetated edges of rivers and shallow, still areas where aquatic plants offer both cover and hunting grounds for tiny invertebrates. It's a compact fish, with females growing noticeably larger than males as is typical in this family. The name Picotee hints at subtle patterning rather than bold coloration, making this a species appreciated more for its behavior and charm than for any flashy looks. Temperament-wise, it is about as easy-going as livebearers get. Peaceful toward tankmates and unlikely to cause trouble in a community setup. That combination of small size, calm disposition, and adaptability to a reasonable range of water conditions makes it a manageable choice for newer fishkeepers who want to explore livebearers beyond the usual guppies and platies. A well-planted tank with some gentle flow will keep these fish comfortable and encourage natural behavior. Like all livebearers, they give birth to free-swimming young, so expect occasional fry if you keep males and females together.
