Found threading through the river systems of Cameroon and neighboring parts of central Africa, Phenacogrammus major is a lesser-known tetra relative from drainages including the Dja, Nyong, Sanaga, and Ntem basins, with additional records from Rio Muni. It belongs to the same genus as the well-loved Congo tetra, and while it lacks that species' widespread fame in the hobby, it shares the group's reputation for active, peaceful schooling behavior. Like its relatives, this fish does best in groups. A tight shoal of six or more really brings out natural behavior and gives the tank a sense of motion. It reaches a modest adult size that makes it workable in mid-sized aquariums without demanding an enormous footprint. The care level falls somewhere in the intermediate range, mainly because west-central African tetras tend to appreciate stable, well-maintained water rather than tolerating the kind of neglect a more forgiving species might shrug off. Diet-wise it's an omnivore and not picky, accepting most quality prepared foods alongside the occasional live or frozen treat. Given its lifespan potential, this is a species worth investing in properly. Good husbandry pays off over the long run.
