The Atlantic slope of Guatemala is a specific and somewhat underrepresented origin for aquarium fish, which gives this species a certain appeal for cichlid enthusiasts who like to dig deeper than the usual suspects. Like most cichlids in this genus, it carries the typical robust, laterally compressed body plan and the territorial attitude you'd expect from a fish that needs to defend patches of riverine habitat. It falls into the intermediate care category, which is fair. Not because it's especially delicate, but because its cichlid temperament means tankmate selection and space planning matter.
