Scheeli Killifish
Fundulopanchax scheeli
A gentle rainforest killifish that rewards patient, thoughtful aquascapers.

About
The Scheeli Killifish (Fundulopanchax scheeli) is a small, non-annual killifish from the streams and brooks of southeastern Nigeria's coastal rainforest zone, with additional populations recorded from the Ndian River in southwestern Cameroon. Unlike many of its killifish relatives, this species lives in permanent water bodies rather than seasonal pools, which makes its care more straightforward than seasonal species that require egg dormancy. Males typically display the rich patterning and color intensity common to the genus, while females are more subdued, as you'd expect. In the aquarium, scheeli is notably peaceful and on the shy side, which is both a charm and a practical consideration when putting together a tank. It can work in a community setting, but you need to choose tankmates thoughtfully. Boisterous or fast-moving fish will stress it and easily outcompete it at feeding time. Small characins, rasboras, Corydoras, and similarly calm companions are far better choices than anything pushy. A well-planted tank with subdued lighting suits it perfectly and helps bring out more confident behavior. For someone who has moved past the beginner stage and wants to explore the fascinating world of African killifish without diving straight into annual species management, scheeli is a genuinely rewarding place to start.
