The genus Aphanius traces its ancestry back to the ancient Tethys Sea, and this species sits in the western clade alongside relatives from the Mediterranean basin and Iberian Peninsula. What truly sets it apart, even within the genus, is the absence of ventral fins, a unique trait among its relatives, and a genetic profile distinct enough that researchers consider it something of an outlier even among western Aphanius.
