The Spotcheek Cichlid (Thorichthys maculipinnis) is a relatively modest-sized cichlid from the Atlantic-draining rivers of southern Mexico, specifically the Papaloapán basin. In the wild it occupies the lower and middle stretches of river valleys, moving over sandy and rocky bottoms in search of food. It's closely related to the more widely kept firemouth cichlid and shares a similar body plan, laterally compressed with a pointed snout, but is distinguished by the spotted patterning on its fins that gives the fish its common name. Coloration tends toward warm golds and blues depending on the individual and its mood, with a dark lateral spot that's typical of the Thorichthys genus. For a cichlid, this species is genuinely peaceful, which makes it one of the more accessible options for hobbyists who want that classic New World cichlid character without the aggression that comes with larger or more territorial relatives. One thing worth knowing is that some individuals can be on the shy side, and keeping them with a few active, similarly sized dither fish can help bring them out and encourage more natural behavior. Overall it's a solid choice for a community setup built around Central American species.
