Pearl Gourami

The pearl gourami (Trichogaster leeri) is one of the more elegantly patterned labyrinth fish you'll come across, covered in a mosaic of white and silver spots that give it that characteristic pearlescent look, with a dark lateral stripe running from snout to tail. Males develop a rich orange-red flush across the throat and chest, especially vivid when they're in breeding condition. In the wild, this species inhabits slow-moving lowland swamps, marshy streams, and densely vegetated waterways across Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Places with soft, acidic water and lots of surface cover. Like all labyrinth fish, it's an obligate air-breather, meaning it must have regular access to the water's surface, so a tight-fitting lid that traps warm humid air is genuinely important for this one. In the aquarium it tends to stay in the upper and middle portions of the tank, moving through the water with that unhurried, almost gliding quality typical of gouramis. Temperament is reliably peaceful, which makes it a solid candidate for community tanks with other non-aggressive species of similar size. Providing plenty of plants and some surface cover will bring out its best behavior and coloration. Intermediate care experience is recommended, mainly because of the labyrinth organ considerations and its preference for stable, well-maintained conditions.
