Found across the middle and upper Congo River basin, including the Kasai, Itimbiri, and Tshopo drainages of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Barbus candens is a miniature cyprinid that rarely makes it into the hobby. Wild collections from the DRC are sporadic at best, commercial breeding programs don't exist for this species, and prices reflect that scarcity whenever fish do surface. Adults max out at well under an inch and a half, giving you some sense of just how small and delicate these fish are. Coloration is subtle rather than bold, and males can be distinguished from the closely related B. hulstaerti, which tends to show a bluer body, larger markings, and yellow-tinted fins, by their comparatively more muted patterning. In the aquarium, B. candens is a shoaling rather than tight-schooling fish that develops a clear pecking order among males, so a group of eight or more is strongly recommended to spread any aggression and give subdominant individuals room to breathe. Decor with plenty of broken sightlines matters here. This is a shy species that will be easily stressed or outcompeted by boisterous tankmates, so pairing it with similarly sized, peaceful African or small South American species is the way to go. Intermediate care experience is a reasonable baseline given its sensitivity and specific social needs.
