A small but characterful dwarf cichlid from Central Africa, Congochromis dimidiatus hails from the middle Congo River basin, with populations recorded across the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the wild it inhabits larger rivers and lakes throughout this region, where the water tends to be soft and on the acidic side. Adults top out at well under three inches, making this one of the more compact cichlids you can keep, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in personality. This is a pair-bonding species. Males and females form lasting partnerships, share responsibility for guarding eggs, and raise fry together, which makes watching a bonded pair a genuinely rewarding experience. They spawn in caves, so providing a few small shelters like coconut halves or ceramic caves will keep them comfortable and encourage natural behavior. Despite the cichlid reputation for aggression, Congochromis dimidiatus is considered approachable enough for newer fishkeepers, as long as the tank is thoughtfully set up with cover and appropriate tankmates. Its soft-water preferences are worth respecting, and it will do best with peaceful companions of similar size.
