The leopard pleco (Pseudacanthicus cf leopardus) is a robust, heavily armored suckermouth catfish from the dark, soft-water rivers of Amazonas state in Brazil. Most specimens entering the hobby are collected from the Rio Demini, a northern tributary of the Rio Negro near the town of Barcelos. A region famous for producing some of the hobby's most sought-after plecos. You'll also see this fish sold under the name leopard cactus pleco, which is a nod to both its spotted patterning and the noticeably spiny texture of its body and fins. Like others in the Pseudacanthicus genus, it has a bold, high-contrast look: a dark base color scattered with lighter spots that vary somewhat between individuals, and a body profile that's more elongated and aggressive-looking than your average pleco. Behaviorally, it can be territorial, especially toward other bottom-dwellers and its own kind, so tank mates and layout deserve some thought. The good news for breeders is that it has been spawned in home aquaria. It's a cave-spawner, with the male taking responsibility for guarding the eggs and fry. As an omnivore it will accept a range of foods, but diet quality matters for long-term health. This is a fish for intermediate keepers who can offer it space and stable water conditions.
