Humpback Limia

The humpback limia (Limia nigrofasciata) is a characterful little livebearer native to Haiti, where it schools in large groups across a range of bottom types. Juveniles tend to tuck themselves into vegetation, a habit worth keeping in mind when setting up a tank for them. The species gets its common name from the noticeable arch that develops along the back of adult males. This hump is actually a deposit of fatty tissue, giving mature males a hunched, almost comical profile that sets them apart from most other livebearers. Females remain more streamlined and tend to grow larger than the males. In a community setting, humpback limias do well alongside other livebearer genera, hardy tetras, corydoras, and loricariids, as long as the water leans hard and alkaline rather than soft and acidic. Breeding is straightforward, though males can be relentless in chasing females, so keeping a higher ratio of females to males and providing dense planting for refuge makes a real difference. Broods can reach up to 50 fry, and the young are robust from birth, accepting finely powdered food right away. There is some suggestion that warmer water temperatures push the sex ratio toward females. Fry grow quickly and can reach adult size within six months.
