The blind swamp eel (Ophisternon infernale) is one of those genuinely unusual fish that reminds you how strange the aquatic world can be. Native to the cave systems beneath the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, this species has adapted to permanent darkness over time, resulting in the greatly reduced or absent eyes that give it its common name. In place of vision, it relies on other senses to navigate and find food in its subterranean home. It has a long, serpentine body typical of swamp eels, and while it won't win any coloration contests, there's a quiet fascination to keeping an animal so thoroughly shaped by its environment. In the wild, males are known to construct and guard nests or burrows, which is a behavior worth watching for in a well-set-up tank. Like other members of its group, it can breathe air directly, supplementing gill respiration when needed. That said, this isn't a beginner fish. It needs a large, carefully arranged aquarium with plenty of hiding places, and its predatory tendencies mean tankmates need to be chosen thoughtfully. For the keeper who appreciates oddities with real natural history behind them, it's a genuinely rewarding species to work with.
