The large scale loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus) is a chunky, eel-bodied cobitid from China that regularly turns up in fish shops labelled as the weather loach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. The two look similar at a glance, but this species can be told apart by the raised, ridge-like crests running along the caudal peduncle and the absence of a dark spot at the tail base. It's native to China and has been reported in Taiwan and Japan, and like so many highly adaptable species it has established itself in parts of Europe beyond its natural range. One reason for that adaptability is its ability to breathe air directly when water conditions are poor. A useful trick that also makes it exceptionally forgiving for newer keepers. Temperament is generally peaceful, though it will take eggs, fry, and very small fish given the opportunity. It's a sociable animal that tends to be livelier and more confident when kept with others of its kind. For tankmates, active medium-to-large fish that occupy the upper and mid-water levels work well. It's sometimes sold as a companion for goldfish, which can be fine with faster varieties, but the loach's enthusiasm at feeding time can stress slower fancy goldfish. Like all cobitids, it has small sub-ocular spines that can snag nets or scratch skin, so handle with care.
