Found in one of the more dramatic corners of South America, Hemiancistrus pankimpuju comes from the boulder fields at the entrance to the Pongo de Manseriche gorge on the Marañon River in Peru. This is demanding, fast-moving water country, and this loricariid reflects that origin with a sturdy, armored build suited to clinging to hard substrates in turbulent conditions. Like others in its genus, it is capable of facultative air breathing, meaning it can supplement gill respiration by gulping air when oxygen levels in the water drop, a handy adaptation for life in unpredictable Amazonian habitats. In the aquarium it appreciates a tank with plenty of rockwork and caves to shelter in, ideally with good water movement. Its size potential is worth noting, since individuals can range considerably from just a few inches to well over a foot, so planning for the larger end makes sense. As an omnivore it is not difficult to feed, accepting a range of prepared foods alongside vegetable matter and the occasional protein-rich treat. This is not a species for the absolute beginner, but a keeper comfortable with larger, territorial plecos and the water quality demands that come with them should find it a rewarding and somewhat unusual addition.
