Found across Africa, this compact weakly electric fish, Petrocephalus bovei bovei, belongs to a group known for generating low-level electrical fields to navigate and communicate in murky waters. It reaches just under four and a half inches as an adult, making it a manageable size for a dedicated species setup or a carefully chosen community. Because it is strictly nocturnal, the aquarium needs to be arranged with hiding in mind. PVC pipes, hollow logs, or other snug cave-like structures give it somewhere to tuck away once the lights come on. Sandy substrate suits it well, and the addition of bogwood creates a natural feel that also seems to put the fish at ease. Come evening, it becomes noticeably more active, emerging to hunt small invertebrates and meaty foods in keeping with its carnivorous diet. Despite its somewhat specialized lifestyle, it is listed as a beginner-appropriate species, which speaks to its general hardiness once the tank layout meets its daytime shelter needs.
