The Isthmian Priapella (Priapella intermedia) is a slender little livebearer from Mexico that doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves. In the wild it occupies fast-moving stretches of water, hanging in eddying currents and even launching itself into the air to snatch flying insects off the surface. A behavior you don't see every day in a fish this size. Juveniles are more cautious, tucking themselves into rock crevices along the banks where the current can't sweep them away. Adults are compact, rarely exceeding two inches, and carry themselves with the confident, streamlined posture you'd expect from a fish built for moving water. In the aquarium, that current-loving nature is worth respecting. Some flow in the tank seems to keep them more comfortable and active. They're social by disposition, doing best when kept in a small group rather than as solitary specimens. The diet is straightforward for an omnivore, and they'll take most standard foods readily, though their natural insect-hunting background means they respond well to small live or frozen invertebrates. This species sits at an intermediate care level, less because it's delicate and more because it rewards keepers who think about replicating the conditions of its fast-water home.
