The large finned lampeye (Procatopus nototaenia) is a small West African killifish relative from the forested river systems of southwest Cameroon, where it inhabits shaded, flowing streams and brooks in the Kienke and Lobi drainages. Unlike many of its killifish cousins, it is not a seasonal species, meaning it does not follow the boom-and-bust life cycle tied to drying pools. It lives in permanently flowing water and has a more typical multi-year lifespan. In the aquarium, that flowing-water origin is worth keeping in mind, as this fish likely appreciates good oxygenation and gentle current rather than stagnant conditions. Males carry noticeably extended, well-developed fins that give the species its common name, and the characteristic iridescent eye gleam shared by other lampeyes adds a subtle, understated shimmer under good lighting. This is not a fish for beginners. It has a reputation for being genuinely demanding in captivity, and getting it to thrive takes attention to water quality and stability. If you can meet its needs, though, it is a rewarding species to keep: small, distinctive, and a bit of a conversation piece among keepers who appreciate the less mainstream corners of the African fish hobby.
