The Leopard Pleco (Pseudacanthicus spinosus) is one of those fish that looks like it was designed to survive anything. Native to the Amazon River basin in South America, this species belongs to a genus known for heavy armoring and sharp, pronounced spines along the body and fins. Hence the 'spinosus' name. The patterning varies but typically involves a dark base color scattered with lighter spots, giving it the leopard reference in its common name. In the aquarium, this pleco develops a real personality over time, becoming bolder as it settles in. It can be territorial with other bottom-dwellers and similarly shaped fish, so tank mates need some thought. Despite its somewhat aggressive reputation, it's not unmanageable. Intermediate keepers who've worked with larger plecos before should find it rewarding. Being an omnivore, it appreciates a varied diet and won't thrive on algae wafers alone. Meaty foods, vegetables, and sinking prepared foods should all be part of the rotation. With a lifespan reaching into the double digits, this is a long-term commitment, and the fish will reward patient keepers who give it space, good water quality, and the right company.
