Sakaramy Killifish

Found in fast-moving mountain streams of northern Madagascar, Pachypanchax sakaramyi is a non-seasonal killifish belonging to a genus entirely endemic to Madagascar and the granitic Seychelles. It sits in the mid-to-upper water column and carries a relatively modest color palette compared to some killifish. Males lack the red flank spots, red-edged fins, and bold caudal margin seen in its close relative P. playfairii. Instead, males show variable dark banding at the base of the unpaired fins, while large females may develop a faint dusky wash near the dorsal-fin base. The species also holds the distinction of having the shortest dorsal-fin base of any Pachypanchax native to Madagascar. Behavior is generally peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates, though smaller fish are at real risk of being eaten. Something worth keeping in mind given that this species does carry conservation concerns in the wild. Males will spar with each other regularly, but injuries are seldom serious. Keeping a group with extra females helps spread any male attention around. Breeding is approachable for intermediate keepers: pairs or groups will scatter eggs among plants or mops, and a well-planted tank can allow a few fry to slip through unnoticed. Despite its threatened status in nature, it has a reasonable foothold in the hobby.
