The banded Epiplatys (Epiplatys fasciolatus) is a non-seasonal killifish from the coastal rivers, forest streams, and swampy areas stretching from Guinea-Bissau down through western Liberia. Unlike the annual killifish that dominate many hobbyist collections, this species doesn't follow a boom-and-bust life cycle tied to seasonal rains, which makes it a more straightforward keeper in some respects. Males are the showier sex, carrying metallic blue or green iridescence across the body and fins, with a red submarginal band running along the lower caudal and anal fins. The thin, dark transverse bars on the flanks can be faint or even hard to spot depending on lighting and mood. Like other Epiplatys, it positions itself near the water surface and has an upturned mouth built for picking off prey from above or just at the waterline, so floating or slow-sinking foods suit it well. Despite being listed as beginner-level in terms of aggression and general disposition, at least one reference flags it as not the easiest fish to keep stable long-term, so attention to water quality and a soft, slightly acidic environment will serve you better than a casual approach. A species worth researching thoroughly before committing.
