The Bone Back (Pelvicachromis taeniatus) is a compact dwarf cichlid from the coastal freshwaters of West Africa, ranging from eastern Benin through Nigeria and into the Niger Delta. It belongs to the same genus as the more widely kept kribensis, and shares a lot of that species' appeal. Bold personality packed into a small body, fascinating spawning behavior, and a manageable size that works well in modestly sized tanks. Males and females both develop attractive coloration, with females often showing particularly vivid markings around breeding time, which makes observing a bonded pair genuinely rewarding. In the wild these fish seek out caves and sheltered cavities for spawning, and they carry that instinct into captivity. Providing a cave or two, whether a clay pot, coconut shell, or commercial spawning cave, will encourage natural behavior and keep them comfortable. They are substrate brooders, meaning both parents take an active role in guarding eggs and fry, which can be a fascinating thing to watch unfold in a home aquarium. That parental dedication does come with a territorial edge, so tankmates should be chosen thoughtfully. This is not a beginner fish exactly, but an attentive intermediate keeper willing to give them their own space will find them genuinely rewarding over their multi-year lifespan.
